I argue that Wifredo Lam’s work cannot be properly without a quite detailed understanding of neo-African religions of the Caribbean and Latin America – specifically, Santeria and Vodún. In this chapter, I present and discuss some of Wifredo Lam’s artworks that reference specific neo-African (Yoruba and Fon) gods of the diaspora. At the centre of the work are two roosters – signifying their importance in Santeria ritual. Moving clockwise from the top center of Lam’s drawing, we see the names of the following: Osu/Osun – who stands guard, protecting Santeria practitioners from harm Chango – the tempestuous god of thunder Eshu-Elegua (in Vodun, Legba) – the carrier of messages between humans and deities, the god of the crossroads, who emerges as a trickster figure in many neo-African cultures (and is sometimes referred to as a ‘devil’) Obatalá – head of all of the orishas, creator of the first man and woman Eleguá – another name for Eshu-Elegba Damballah – the serpent-sprit from Dahomey, who found a home in Haitian vodun Oyá/Yansa – a powerful female warrior-deity, a wife/concubine to Chango (Shango) and the owner of cemeteries Ogún – god of iron, patron of all metals, who sometimes exhibits violent behaviour. The work is inscribed with the names of orishas in the pantheon of the Yoruba people of West Africa – and of certain neo-African and Catholic cultures of the Americas (such as Santeria in Cuba). But it has affinities with neo-African, ideographic ground drawings that are connected to ritual – such as vévé in Haitian Vodun and pontos riscados in Brazilian Candomblé and Umbanda, whose symbolic markings do not simply represent various divinities but call them forth.
